Palma, Mallorca: Spain’s new government representative in the Balearic Islands calls for dialogue with people who hold sharply opposing views as he takes office on Tuesday, 3 November. Pere Joan Pons takes the oath at the government delegation’s offices in central Palma. He says his first days in the job have been marked by “uncertainty”, but does not explain what he means.

Pons thanks Spain’s state security forces for their cooperation. He says security helps people live together peacefully and warns that disinformation and manipulation online also threaten that peace.

Spain’s Council of Ministers appointed Pons the previous Tuesday. His first days in office coincided with protests in Palma organised under the name of the Blous network. They passed with hardly any incidents. Pons does not link the protests to his remark about uncertainty.
