Granada airport runway set to close for 21 days in May
Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport faces a 21-day runway closure in May 2027: flights can operate from Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport while crews tackle work that cannot be done overnight. The planned closure runs from 23.15 on 5 May to 06.30 on 27 May 2027, though the timing depends on how the work progresses. Airport operator Aena has awarded the €19,562,849.89 contract to a joint venture between Matías Arrom Bibiloni and Sampol.
Why the runway needs to close
Aircraft traffic wears down runway paving, Aena says. Crews will remove the existing surface from the runway and its edges and lay a new one, making the paving 2.5 centimetres thicker. They will also resurface the taxiways that link the runway to aircraft parking areas.
The runway ends need more extensive work: their rigid paving will be removed and replaced with flexible paving. Lighting on the runway, taxiways, parking areas and approach will also be replaced. The new LED equipment is intended to use less energy. The whole project is expected to take about 20 months.
What happens to flights
Aena plans to do most of the work at night, when the airport is closed to air traffic from 23.15 to 06.30. But work at the runway ends and other critical areas needs a longer closure. During those 21 days, work is due to continue around the clock.
Aena says it has told airlines and other businesses at the airport in advance so they can reorganise flights and operations. Once the runway reopens, only work that can be done at night without affecting the usual flight schedule should remain.
