Palma grandfather arrested after children found on third-floor ledge
National Police officers arrested a grandfather in Palma, Mallorca, on suspicion of leaving his two minor grandchildren unattended after they were found on a narrow ledge outside a third-floor flat last Saturday afternoon. Police said the older child came close to falling.
Neighbours called the 091 emergency number after seeing the children partly suspended over the edge. Officers arriving at the building saw them walking along the ledge, while residents had already tried repeatedly to get a response from inside the flat.
One officer prepared padded items below as another spoke to the children from a window overlooking the inner courtyard. After several minutes, the officer gained their trust and persuaded them to return calmly indoors. A second officer then climbed down the façade via a neighbour's home to enter the flat and look after them.
The grandfather subsequently appeared and told officers he had just woken from a siesta, police said. The children's parents arrived shortly afterwards. Officers arrested the man on suspicion of child abandonment, considering that the children had been placed in serious danger.
