Menorca's €4.46 million plan for trees and EV chargers

On the island of Menorca, 4.46 million euros is earmarked for trees, fewer water leaks and more electric vehicle chargers: the island council plans projects across all eight municipalities in 2026 and 2027. The Council of Menorca announced the funding on Tuesday, 29 September. Each municipality will agree its projects with the council, so the work has not yet been fixed town by town.

Schoolyards, parks and water pipes

Proposals include reshaping school playgrounds, planting trees and adding plants that need little water. Councils could also improve existing parks and gardens or create new green spaces.

Water projects could tackle leaks in municipal pipes, improve how consumption is measured and use rainwater for irrigation. The municipalities will also have to update their climate action plans.

Charging points and the funding

The plan would extend Menorca’s network of electric vehicle charging points. Solar panels, batteries and other energy-saving measures are also proposed for municipal facilities.

The Council of Menorca says it will transfer 3.1 million euros to the eight municipalities and carry out projects worth a further 1.33 million euros itself. It says 3.5 million euros will come from the Balearic government and 905,726 euros from its own funds. Agreements with each municipality will set out the projects, funding and how the work will be carried out.
