In Palma, Mallorca, the new Guardia Civil chief for the Balearic Islands is seeking housing for officers so they can stay on the islands with their families. Alejandro Hernández Mosquera made the pledge at his appointment ceremony at Fundación Sa Nostra on Friday, 23 October 2026. He said he would work with public authorities and the private sector to find solutions.

Filling posts is not enough, he said: officers must also want to come to the islands, build their careers there and remain with their families. He welcomed an agreement between authorities on a new island allowance, but said the high cost of living remained an obstacle.

Hernández Mosquera said he would keep pressing senior officers for measures to make a Balearic posting more attractive. He cited fair recognition in career assessments, priority rights where applicable and better chances for officers to build a life on the islands. He also wants improvements to staffing, job allocations and Guardia Civil buildings, within the resources available.
