Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, has lost 102 Guardia Civil officers after the summer. Another 211 have joined, but 147 are obliged to stay for only one year, according to the force’s professional association Jucil. On Wednesday 28 October 2026, Jucil urged the new Spanish government delegate in the Balearics, Pere Joan Pons, to act over staff shortages.

New officers may not stay long

The administration says it has filled 384 vacancies across the Balearics. Jucil disputes what that figure suggests: it says only 310 officers are new arrivals, while the other 74 have moved between units.

Of those new arrivals, 235 across the islands are obliged to stay for only a year. Jucil says they include officers posted there compulsorily and academy trainees on placement.

Jucil calls for a new island allowance

Jucil says a recent change to the island pay allowance has failed to stop officers leaving. It also points to the difficulty of finding housing and the cost of living in the Balearics.

The association wants Pons to introduce an allowance designed for the islands, with fixed amounts, alongside other incentives. It warns that Mallorca could lose more than half the officers who arrived this year by next summer.
