Mallorca handbag theft: granddaughter bitten in chase

Mallorca: A handbag thief bites a granddaughter in Cala Ratjada on Monday 26 October as she tries to recover her grandmother’s bag. Both women are injured and taken by ambulance to Hospital de Llevant, the Guardia Civil says.

The man gets out of a passing car and snatches the older woman’s handbag on Faralló street. Her granddaughter catches up with the getaway car and reaches through a window for the bag. He bites her arm, then opens the car door violently, causing both women to fall to the ground.

A photo points police to the car

Security camera footage, a photo the women take as the car escapes and an account from a witness who helps them lead investigators to its owner. She initially says she lent the car to her partner, but police say she was driving. The car hits a kerb during the escape, and she later leaves it in a Capdepera car park.

Officers find the suspected bag thief in an industrial area of Artà. He admits the theft to them and hands over the handbag, which is in his motorcycle’s storage compartment. Police find more of the women’s belongings in the getaway car.

Both suspects released

Police arrest the man and the driver on suspicion of violent robbery and causing injury. A Manacor investigating court releases the woman because she has two minors in her care. The man is released provisionally under conditions while he awaits trial.
