Balearic MPs back healthcare status for social workers
Four of five measures to strengthen health social work win unanimous backing in Palma, Mallorca: the Balearic Parliament’s Health Committee votes on a proposal from the Socialist Party (PSIB) on Wednesday, 30 September. The committee wants social workers in healthcare recognised as healthcare professionals. The vote does not grant them that status.
The committee says their work contributes to broader care and helps reduce inequalities in health. It calls on Spain’s government and Ministry of Health to develop specialist training and professional accreditation with universities and professional bodies. It also asks the Balearic government to put more social workers across the public health network and draw up a development plan with the Official College of Social Work of the Balearic Islands and scientific organisations. That plan would aim to improve coordination between social and health services and community care.
One part of the proposal failed. Six People’s Party members voted against backing the Spanish government’s proposed reform of the law governing healthcare professions. Five members from MÉS per Mallorca and the PSIB voted for it, while the Mixed Group abstained.
