Palma hospital sends 3 new health videos to patients

Patients at University Hospital Son Espases in Palma are receiving three new health videos by SMS this week. The films cover heart valve repair surgery, endometriosis and liver biopsy. They take the hospital’s digital prescription service — which sends information to patients by text message — to 12 programmes since it began in 2022.

Each video revisits the specialist’s explanation, sets out how to prepare for a test or procedure, and covers care needed afterwards and following discharge. The clinician treating the patient prepares the material, with graphics and animation added. Patients also receive information on what their process will involve, recommendations and possible questions.

142,000 text messages sent

The Balearic Islands Ministry of Health says Son Espases has produced 41 videos and infographics for the scheme. It has sent 142,000 SMS messages to 70,200 participating patients, while the videos have drawn 678,000 views on YouTube.

After the process ends, patients are sent a satisfaction survey. Of 2,286 responses on the information videos, 95% said they were useful or very useful and 81% said they brought them greater peace of mind.

Videos preferred to paper

Some 85% were satisfied with the information received, and 68% found it easy to understand. The strongest preference was for the format: 92% chose video over paper.

The ministry says the digital service has helped patients arrive better prepared, reduced cancelled tests and improved their understanding of what lies ahead.
