Healthcare staff shortages: Menorca seeks answers

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Healthcare staff shortages reach far beyond the islands: health leaders meet on Menorca, in the Balearic Islands, on Friday to discuss how to fill posts and give professionals reasons to stay. The meeting is the first event ahead of the 25th National Congress of Hospitals and Healthcare Management, which takes place from 10 to 12 March 2027 at the Congress Palace in Palma, Mallorca.

The Balearic regional government says the shortage also affects rural areas, overstretched services and specialties that receive less recognition. Filling vacancies alone is not enough, it says. Employers need to offer professional and personal prospects that make people want to stay.

The meeting also looks at how island geography and distance can prompt solutions, including better coordination, technology and new ways of providing care. Balearic health minister Manuela García and Javier Ureña, head of the Balearic Health Service and president of the congress, are among those taking part. The Spanish Society of Health Managers and the National Association of Nursing Managers organised the event.
