Mallorca faces heavy rain risk as storms spread Monday
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, faces a risk of heavy rain on Monday as the stormiest weather could spread across the archipelago. Sunday could also bring powerful downpours and thunderstorms. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency warned on Thursday, 15 October, that the two days could be the worst of the spell.
Where the rain could hit
On Sunday, showers across the Balearics could become very heavy in places. The areas with the most rain could extend across the rest of the islands, including Mallorca, on Monday. Strong winds and rough seas are also possible along the Balearic coast.
The agency says some parts of Spain’s Mediterranean mainland coast could receive 150–250 litres per square metre in a few hours. It gives no such figure for Mallorca. Local flooding is possible in low-lying areas, while streams and watercourses could rise suddenly, particularly where the ground is already soaked.
Why the forecast may change
An isolated low-pressure system, known as a DANA, is expected to increase unsettled weather from Saturday. Very moist air is also moving towards the Mediterranean coast and the Balearics, while a cold front will bring temperatures down.
The weather is likely to ease from Tuesday. Until then, the agency says it cannot pin down exactly where the heaviest rain will fall or how much each area will get.
