Mallorca in Spain’s Balearic Islands could get up to 30 l/m2 of rain in an hour on Sunday: heavier downpours threaten Ibiza and Formentera. The Balearic Islands emergency service warned on Friday that Ibiza could see up to 50 l/m2 in an hour early on Sunday. Rain is expected to reach Mallorca around midday, but should be less intense there.

Ibiza faces the heaviest rain

A mass of cold air approaching from the north is behind the forecast, according to emergency service chief Aurelio Soto. The first showers could arrive on Saturday, before rain intensifies overnight and brings up to 30 l/m2 in an hour.

By early Sunday, Ibiza could receive up to 50 l/m2 in an hour. Soto said around 130 l/m2 could fall there over five or six hours. The rain could raise water levels in streams, send water through built-up areas and leave it standing on paved ground.

Advice for homes and roads

Soto recommends avoiding outdoor activities on Sunday. The 112 emergency service advises people to secure doors and windows against water and bring in objects or furniture that could be swept away.

If a home floods, 112 advises staying out of basements and garages, moving to higher areas and switching off the main electricity supply. On roads, it recommends slowing down, leaving more space between vehicles and using main routes. The advisory committee for the Balearic Islands’ Meteobal severe weather plan will review the forecast again on Saturday.
