Mallorca heavy rain risk as Pityuses face 150 l/m2
Mallorca faces a heavy rain threat from Monday morning: the worst downpours could spread from the Pityuses, a group of Balearic islands where more than 150 l/m2 may fall in twelve hours on Sunday. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, warned on Friday that the weather could bring storms and local flooding. It has named the weather system Adam and expects unsettled conditions from Saturday.
Sunday’s heaviest rain
Showers are expected across the Balearic Islands on Sunday. Aemet says the largest totals are most likely around the Pityuses and near Cape La Nao on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. In places, rain could be exceptionally heavy and persistent.
Low-lying areas could flood, while streams and watercourses could rise suddenly. Strong winds and rough seas are also possible along Mediterranean coasts.
What Monday could bring Mallorca
The heaviest rain could remain around the Pityuses on Monday but spread to the rest of the Balearic Islands from the morning. Across the weather event, local totals could reach 150 to 300 l/m2, with even higher amounts possible in the hardest-hit places. Aemet has not given a separate rainfall figure for Mallorca.
Unsettled weather is likely to ease from Tuesday. For now, Aemet cannot say exactly where the most rain will fall: that depends in part on the position of Adam and the winds near the ground.
