Mallorca storm warning: days of heavy rain ahead
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, faces heavy showers from Thursday, 1 October: Spain’s weather agency warns that the storm could last several days. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) says showers across the Balearics and eastern mainland could be very heavy, with some reaching torrential intensity.
In some areas, more than 150 l/m2 could fall in 6 hours. That could cause flooding and sudden rises in watercourses. Aemet does not say whether that rainfall figure applies to Mallorca.
Aemet says unstable weather is helping storms form, while the Mediterranean Sea is unusually warm for this time of year — more than 3 degrees above normal in some areas. Its spokesman, Rubén del Campo, urges caution. The unsettled weather could last at least until Monday, but Aemet says it is not yet clear how a new weather system forming from Sunday will affect the area.
