Mallorca rain warning: up to 50 litres an hour

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, could see around 50 litres of rain per hour in its south and east overnight into Monday: a yellow warning covers the island for rain and coastal conditions. The technical advisory committee for the Balearic Islands’ Meteobal severe-weather plan activated the warning on Saturday, 17 October. It also placed Ibiza and Formentera under an orange warning for rain and thunderstorms.

Rain arrives in Mallorca on Sunday

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) expects rain to reach Mallorca from midday on Sunday, initially bringing 20 to 30 litres per hour. It could grow heavier overnight and on Monday morning, particularly in the south and east. Unlike the storms forecast for Ibiza and Formentera, those over Mallorca are expected to move on more quickly.

Orange warning for Ibiza and Formentera

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for Ibiza and Formentera from Saturday night, with the strongest rain expected from Sunday morning. At times, up to 50 litres per hour could fall, with a total of up to 160 litres over five or six hours. The rain could continue intermittently into Monday.

The Balearic Islands’ emergency authority advises against outdoor activities during the heaviest rain and urges people to avoid unnecessary journeys. It says flooded areas and watercourses should not be crossed on foot or by car. Emergency services remain on standby, and the Meteobal committee plans to review the forecast again at 12.00 on Sunday.
