Mallorca: Helicopter flies crane to Sa Dragonera pier
Off Mallorca in the Balearic Islands, a helicopter flies a new crane to the Cala Lledó landing stage on Sa Dragonera this week as repair work resumes. Getting heavy machinery to the island by other means is difficult. The Balearic government's Department of the Sea and Water Cycle reported the operation on 23 October.
Why the crane needs a generator
The helicopter also brought in the crane’s hydraulic equipment and a generator. The natural park’s solar installation cannot supply enough power to run the crane, which will lift boats at the landing stage.
The new generator replaces one kept on the island for emergencies. The helicopter took the old one away, and the island council moved it for use at another site.
Repairs enter their final phase
The repairs cost just over €1 million. Work stopped from March to October in both 2025 and 2026 to protect the natural area. PortsIB now expects the project to finish before the end of the year.
At Cala Lledó, a ramp will replace the old steps. A concrete slab and wooden walkway will bring the usable width to two metres, while repairs will address parts of the foundation that are damaged or undermined. The remaining work includes adding stone to the protective barrier, installing the crane and generator, and finishing the access and safety features.
