Mallorca helicopter rescues two hikers in trouble

A Guardia Civil helicopter rescued two hikers in separate parts of Mallorca on Sunday: a 27-year-old Spanish woman with a knee injury and a 75-year-old Swedish man struck by severe illness. Neither could continue their route. The woman had fallen while hiking the previous day, while the man became unwell during a guided walk.

The woman had sheltered at the Arenalet de s'Aubarca refuge after her knee injury left her unable to walk on. Guardia Civil specialists and Samu 061 staff flew to her in the force's helicopter.

They assessed her injury and diagnosed a possible sprain. After she was stabilised, the helicopter took her to Son Sant Joan air base, where a family member took charge of her.

Man winched up near Puig Gros

Later that afternoon, the Guardia Civil's Operations Service Centre coordinated a second rescue near Puig Gros. The Swedish hiker was on the GR-21 route towards Sant Elm when severe illness stopped him from carrying on.

The helicopter could not land because of the terrain. Specialists and a doctor went down to treat him on the spot, then raised him into the aircraft by cable and flew him to hospital for assessment.
