Mallorca heritage funding: MPs demand island factor
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, should have its island status count when Spain awards heritage grants: a Balearic Parliament committee backs the demand in Palma on Thursday, 22 October. The committee approves a non-binding motion put forward by the People’s Party, calling for clearer rules on funding for cultural heritage and fine arts.
The committee wants Spain’s central government to publish how it chooses projects and organisations for grants awarded directly. It also wants a breakdown of the money allocated by region, recipient, project and year.
For heritage grants, the motion says island status should count alongside a project’s cultural importance, condition, urgency and public interest. It calls for the government to work with regional and local authorities to identify restoration needs, and for funding to address any regional imbalances. Every party backs the motion except MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca, which abstain.
The committee also backs a separate People’s Party motion on household employment. All parties want the central government to investigate falling legal employment and registration, examine irregular work and make paperwork simpler for families hiring legally. The People’s Party and Vox also back financial, tax and social security measures to help families hire household workers legally, particularly those on middle and low incomes or caring for children, older people or dependants. The other parties abstain on that request.
