Home fires kill two women in the Balearic Islands in 2025
Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands: home fires kill two women in 2025, compared with four deaths in each of the previous three years. The figures come from an annual report by the Fundación Mapfre and the Professional Association of Fire Service Technicians, presented in Madrid on Monday, 26 October.
More callouts to homes across Spain
Across Spain, fires and explosions killed 226 people in 2025, down 3.4% on the previous year. Of those, 165 died in homes. Yet emergency crews attended more incidents in homes: callouts rose from 19,411 to 19,979.
What the report says about the risks
Poisoning caused 132 of the 165 deaths in homes. Among fires whose cause was identified, electrical faults were the most common at 36.9%, followed by heat-producing appliances at 22.6%. The account does not give a cause for the two Balearic deaths.
The Fundación Mapfre called for smoke detectors in every home. It also recommended checking electrical installations and using heat-producing appliances safely.
