12 beds: Menorca home hospital care starts in 2027
Menorca will begin providing hospital-level care in patients’ homes in the first quarter of 2027. The island-wide service will open with 12 beds, three vehicles and a team of nine staff. Health Minister Manuela García announced the plan on Monday, 21 September, during a visit to Hospital Mateu Orfila with Balearic Islands President Marga Prohens.
The new home hospital care unit is for clinically stable patients who still need hospital treatment but can receive it safely at home. García said the service would offer the same quality and safety safeguards as a conventional hospital stay.
Its initial team will comprise two doctors, six nurses and an administrative worker. García said the unit should cut conventional admissions and tighten coordination between the hospital, primary care and emergency services.
More specialist care at Hospital Mateu Orfila
The visit also highlighted changes in cancer care. The oncology service has filled its staffing level with a fourth specialist and added another consultation room.
A hereditary cancer genetic counselling unit has handled 315 consultations since opening. Completed studies have identified 26 Menorca families with genetic variants linked to a higher cancer risk.
Digestive medicine waiting lists have also fallen after a third specialist joined a year ago. The number waiting dropped from 718 in December 2024 to 131, while the wait for a first appointment fell from 134 days to 19.
New pain, kidney and mental health services
Since late 2025, the pain unit has had its own separate clinic rather than sharing consultations with anaesthesiology. A new nephrology clinic has also been created after Hospital Mateu Orfila added a peritoneal dialysis programme to its services.
The hospital’s mental health day unit launched an intensive outpatient programme for people with dual diagnosis in July. It now provides specialised care in Menorca that had previously, in many cases, required patients to be referred to Mallorca.
