Palma: one woman hurt in homophobic stone attack

One woman has been treated for an arm injury after a man allegedly threw stones at her and another woman in Palma, Mallorca, on the night of 10 September. The man, who was on a bicycle in Calle Manacor, was arrested by the National Police after what the force describes as a suspected hate crime. The women said he had targeted them with homophobic and transphobic abuse and death threats.

Bottle misses before stones hit

The women told officers they tried to leave, but the man followed them on his bicycle while continuing the abuse over their sexual orientation. He allegedly threw a glass bottle which missed them, then picked up several stones from the ground and hurled them at the pair.

One woman suffered an arm injury. The women also said the man brandished a wrench he was carrying and struck them several times before they called for help. An ambulance took one of them to a medical centre for treatment.

Police arrest man after alleged threats

National Police patrols found the two women sheltering from the man, who officers described as highly agitated. Police said he was very aggressive and uncooperative when they approached him.

He allegedly actively resisted arrest and made death threats against officers. The National Police arrested him on suspicion of threats and a hate crime.
