Palma horse carriages: protest demands electric switch
Dozens of animal-rights campaigners returned to the streets in Palma, Mallorca, on Saturday, 12 September, calling for horse carriages to be replaced by electric vehicles. The protest began at 11.00 at the junction of Carrer del Conqueridor and Avinguda d’Antoni Maura. It was the second consecutive week of demonstrations over the horse-drawn carriages, known locally as calesas.
The junction is usually a place where several carriages wait, but none were there on Saturday morning. Some protesters wore green T-shirts and held signs reading: “Electric carriages now!”
Satya Animal and Progreso en Verde called the protest. They want Palma City Council to publish a timetable with firm deadlines for removing every horse from the service and replacing the vehicles with electric models.
The groups also accused carriage operators of “constant impunity” and said checks were lacking on an activity they claim repeatedly breaks the law. They are demanding that the council set out when and how the switch to electric vehicles will happen.
