Mallorca horseshoe snake: MPs demand invasive listing
Mallorca’s horseshoe snake is at the centre of a unanimous call for action: Balearic MPs want Spain to add it to the national list of invasive alien species. Every political group backed the proposal in the parliament’s Economic Affairs Committee on Thursday, 1 October. People’s Party MP Jacobo Varela brought the non-binding motion.
The MPs want Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge to strengthen prevention, control and monitoring of invasive species affecting the islands. They also want the Balearic government to step up its programmes against the horseshoe snake on Mallorca and Eivissa.
The call reaches the places where ornamental plants enter the islands, as well as other routes by which invasive species may arrive accidentally. MPs are asking for more research into the snake’s impact on native wildlife and campaigns to inform the public.
