Menorca hospital clowns: photos reveal unseen work

At Hospital General Mateu Orfila in Maó, Menorca, photographs show hospital clowns arriving, getting ready and spending time with patients and families. Sonrisa Médica opens the exhibition, El arte de humanizar, on Tuesday, 29 September. It is on show in the hospital entrance hall until 6 October.

Photographer Josep Albons spent six days on the project: three at the hospital, one at each of two care homes for older people in Maó, and one in a studio. His pictures show how the clowns accompany people through illness, hospital stays and periods when they need care. Sonrisa Médica says it wants to bring work that often goes unseen into view.

The group has worked on Menorca since 2018. Its clowns visit the hospital every Tuesday and Thursday, with a separate programme in the operating theatre on the second Friday of each month. They also make weekly visits to the two care homes. From 8 to 14 October, the exhibition moves to Canal Salat Health Centre in Ciutadella, Menorca.
