Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands record around 23,600 public hospital consultations in a single day: health minister Manuela García says more people entitled to care and longer lives are adding to the pressure. She also puts that day’s tally at 1,522 emergency cases and 223 operations. Speaking to the Balearic Parliament’s Health Committee in Palma, Mallorca, on Wednesday, 7 October, she describes claims of hospital collapse as “alleged”.

More people need care

García says 1.2 million people across the islands currently have a health card. As people live longer, she says, more are living with illnesses that need continuing care. Patients with complex, long-term conditions do not always need a hospital for urgent treatment, she argues. Teams from different fields should help them recover and return to their communities where possible.

A care project for Mallorca

The Balearic Government plans facilities for patients who need care between urgent hospital treatment and a return to their communities. A project is under way in Felanitx, Mallorca, another is under way on Menorca, and one on Eivissa is complete.

García also wants digital procedures and closer work between health and social care to speed up paperwork and avoid doing the same work twice.
