Balearics hospital waste deal costs €1.9m from November

Needles, medicine remnants, dressings and disposable clothing from Balearic Health Service sites will continue to be collected and disposed of after 1 November 2026. The Balearic Government has approved a 12-month extension to the hospital waste contract, with spending capped at €1.9m. President Marga Prohens announced the decision in Palma on 25 September.

The contract covers collection, transport, treatment and disposal of clinical waste from hospitals, health centres, basic health units and other Health Service facilities. It includes sharp objects, medicines left over from treatment and chemotherapy material, as well as dressings, gauze and single-use clothing.

The government also approved a maintenance contract for Hospital de Manacor. It covers planned and ongoing repairs, inspections and upkeep of the hospital’s buildings, technical installations and general systems.

A separate framework agreement can now be prepared for ureteral catheters and drainage systems for Health Service centres. The equipment is used in urology, general surgery and interventional radiology, including planned procedures and urgent cases.
