Mallorca hospitality VAT rise to 21% voted down

On Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, a plan to raise VAT on hospitality, campsites and spas from 10% to 21% fails: a Balearic Parliament committee votes it down on Tuesday, 29 September. MÉS per Mallorca brought the proposal to the Finance and Budget Committee, where MP Lluís Apestegia argued for it.

The party wanted Spain’s government to remove those services from the reduced VAT rate. Until that happened, it wanted the Balearic government to change the islands’ special tax regime, known as the REB. Revenue from the extra 11 percentage points would have gone directly to the autonomous community.

MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca cast two votes in favour. Twelve members from PP, PSIB and Vox vote against, leaving the proposed rise off the table.
