Mallorca rape trial: woman says she woke naked in hostel

A woman tells a court in Palma, Mallorca, that she woke naked in a hostel with no memory of how she got there. Giving evidence on Tuesday, 27 October, she says she had pain in her genital area and scratches on her legs. A man is on trial, accused of raping her.

She says she had gone out with friends but remembers nothing after a visit to the toilet. Questioned by the defence, she repeatedly said she could not recall what happened next. She said she had not taken cocaine and could not remember taking anything else or being given anything.

Prosecutors say the woman met the accused, then 41, after a night out in the s’Arenal nightlife area of Mallorca. They allege he later took her to a hostel in Palma and raped her when she was too weak to resist. They are seeking nine years in prison and €3,000 in compensation. His lawyer says he has already paid €1,000.

The trial is due to continue on Wednesday, when the accused is expected to give evidence.
