Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands: hotel chains demand more inspections of illegal tourism offers at a meeting with island leaders on Tuesday. The Balearic Hotel Chains Association raises the issue with Council of Mallorca president Llorenç Galmés and tourism councillor Guillem Ginard. Association chairman Miquel Miralles also calls for closer co-operation between public authorities to tackle illegal offers.

The chains are worried about the gap between legal and illegal tourism offers. They also want a less polarised debate about tourism, grounded in data, planning and practical solutions, according to the council’s statement.

Galmés says tourism drives Mallorca’s economy, but its future must also account for residents’ wellbeing, the island’s protection and the quality of visitors’ trips. The council wants tourism to extend beyond sun-and-beach holidays, with more attention to culture, food and Mallorca’s landscape. Its statement does not announce new inspections.
