Mallorca hotel cleaners get backing for early retirement
On Mallorca, hotel room cleaners press for earlier retirement: Francina Armengol, president of Spain’s Congress of Deputies, backs their call at a meeting in Calvià on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, in cases where it is needed. The General Union of Workers’ (UGT) Federation of Services, Mobility and Consumer Affairs has organised the meeting for Tuesday and Wednesday. It aims to draw attention to the demands of a job done predominantly by women.
The toll of cleaning rooms
The meeting will examine the physical and mental strain of the work, including the effort that builds up over a working life. Room cleaners are also being given a chance to describe their own working conditions and argue for rules that would allow earlier retirement.
Armengol also wants work-related illnesses to be recognised. She says the women have made historic gains in the Balearics, but much remains to be done.
What happens on Wednesday
Representatives of hotel companies including Meliá, Iberostar and RIU are due to speak on Wednesday. Spain’s minister for inclusion, social security and migration, Elma Saiz, is expected to close the meeting alongside state secretary for tourism Rosario Sánchez and UGT general secretary Pepe Álvarez.
