Ibiza hotel cleaners: Armengol urges early retirement

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On the island of Ibiza in the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol is calling for hotel cleaners to retire early rather than leave work with their bodies worn down by the job. She made the call on 7 November after meeting a group of cleaners. Armengol, who leads the Balearic Socialists, also wants their work-related illnesses recognised by law.

Hotel beds and workloads

Armengol points to a tourism law introduced when she led the Balearic government. It requires hotels to replace their beds with models that can be raised, to help prevent work-related illness. She says hotels across the islands are not meeting that requirement and that measures to control workloads are not being applied either.

The law also covers Mallorca. Armengol did not name any hotels she says are failing to comply.

Strike call on Ibiza

Armengol urged people on Ibiza to support a general strike on 11 November. She criticised housing policy on the island, saying the Balearic government and local councils had neglected it. She also accused the People’s Party and Vox of threatening to privatise the pension system.
