Mallorca hotel room cleaners push for early retirement

Mallorca hotel room cleaners want a fair chance to retire early: they will make their case on Tuesday and Wednesday in Magaluf, in the municipality of Calvià. The two-day meeting is organised by the Services, Mobility and Consumer Federation of the UGT trade union. Three room cleaners are due to speak about their working conditions.

UGT says the physical effort builds up over a working life and takes a toll on both body and mind. It wants that strain recognised through rules known as reduction coefficients, which are at the centre of its call for earlier retirement.

On Wednesday morning, Balearic labour minister Catalina Cabrer and PSIB parliamentary spokesman Iago Negueruela are due to speak. Representatives of Fergus, Meliá, Iberostar, RIU, MarSenses and Paradores de Turismo de España will follow. Spain’s minister for inclusion, social security and migration, Elma Saiz, tourism secretary of state Rosario Sánchez and UGT general secretary Pepe Álvarez are expected to close the meeting from 12.30pm.
