Mallorca hotel room cleaners’ bid to retire early without a pension cut comes into focus in Palma, Mallorca, on Monday, when minister Elma Saiz visits the city. She is expected to give an update at 11.00 at the UGT union’s Palma office, the union said on Friday.

UGT’s Services, Mobility and Consumer Federation filed the request in July. It wants hotel room cleaners to be able to retire early without reductions to their pensions. The federation also hopes Saiz will report progress on recognising occupational diseases affecting the workers.

The meeting was originally set for 28 October but was cancelled after a train accident in Urda. Francina Armengol, president of the Congress of Deputies, and tourism state secretary Rosario Sánchez are also due to speak, along with federation officials Omar Rodríguez and José García Relucio.

At 17.00, Saiz is due to meet José Luís García of the CCOO union in the Balearic Islands and UGT’s Pedro Homar at CCOO’s office. CCOO says the unions will press for stronger social protection and workers’ rights.
