Mallorca hotel room cleaners could retire before 60: their union says the process is well advanced, but the government has not announced a decision. General Workers’ Union (UGT) leader Pepe Álvarez spoke at a union event in Magaluf, Mallorca, on 28 October 2026. He wants a lower retirement age for people who spend their working lives cleaning hotel rooms.

The union is pressing the government to introduce rules that would allow those workers to retire before their 60th birthday. Álvarez said the Balearic Islands had begun measuring workloads, but more needed to be done so cleaners could finish their shifts in good condition. He also urged hoteliers to improve staff conditions.

Whether the change will come before Spain’s general election on 29 November remains unclear. Álvarez said any announcement must come from the government, though UGT would welcome a decision before the vote. He said the measure had not been secured during the previous two parliamentary terms.
