Mallorca hotel room cleaners demand early retirement
Mallorca’s hotel room cleaners want to retire earlier: they are making their case at a meeting in Magaluf, Calvià, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Three cleaners are due to describe their working lives at the event, organised by the Services, Mobility and Consumer Federation of the General Union of Workers (UGT).
The union says the job, done mostly by women, takes a physical and mental toll. It points to demanding work and effort that builds up over a working life. The cleaners want that strain recognised through retirement reduction coefficients, a measure intended to allow earlier retirement.
On Wednesday morning, Balearic labour minister Catalina Cabrer and Socialist parliamentary spokesman Iago Negueruela are due to speak. Representatives of hotel companies including Fergus, Meliá, Iberostar and RIU will follow.
Spain’s minister for inclusion, social security and migration, Elma Saiz, tourism secretary of state Rosario Sánchez and UGT leader Pepe Álvarez are due to close the meeting from 12.30 on Wednesday.
