Mallorca hotels warn: room cleaners average 50

On Mallorca, hotel chains warn that room cleaners across the Balearic Islands are about 50 on average, with too few younger workers coming through to replace them. Representatives of Fergus, Meliá, Iberostar, RIU, MarSenses and Paradores de Turismo de España raised the concern on 28 October in Magaluf, Calvià, Mallorca. They were speaking at an event organised by the services, mobility and consumer federation of the UGT union to campaign for earlier retirement for room cleaners.

Hotels look to lighten the work

The chains say they have measured workloads at all their hotels and are working to reduce them. Meliá is among those introducing mechanised trolleys.

Calls for earlier retirement

Guillem Gelavert of Fergus Hotels wants rules that would allow room cleaners to retire earlier, given the physical demands of the job. Jaime Palau of Iberostar Hotels & Resorts also sees earlier retirement for jobs with heavier workloads as a way to tackle the shortage of younger workers.

MarSenses Hotels & Homes says it has cut the number of rooms assigned for cleaning and reduced working hours to 37 and a half. It has also shortened hours for room cleaners over 58. The chain’s Rodrigo Fitaroni says its room cleaners now average 36 years old.
