Balearics hotels: 11.36m stays slip despite more guests

Hotel stays in the Balearic Islands fell in August even as hotels welcomed more guests. The total reached 11.36 million overnight stays, down 0.4% on the same month last year. Spain’s National Statistics Institute recorded 2.13 million hotel guests, a rise of 3.54%.

It was still the third-highest August total for overnight stays in the region’s historical series. Foreign guests made up 1.91 million of all hotel visitors, or 89.55%, while 223,438 guests lived in Spain.

Foreign visitors accounted for 10,471,794 overnight stays, compared with 895,649 by guests living in Spain. The number of guests from Spain rose 5.7% year on year, while foreign arrivals increased by 3.3%.

Hotels in the Balearic Islands filled 90.28% of their places in August, ahead of the Canary Islands at 82.01% and the Basque Country at 80.39%. The sector employed 80,659 people, up 4.3%.

The average daily room rate climbed 9.2% to €230.7, while hotel prices overall rose 7.58%. The islands also accounted for 23.29% of all hotel overnight stays recorded in Spain during August, ahead of Catalonia and Andalusia.
