Mallorca: Palma demolition approved, 15 homes planned
In Palma, Mallorca, the city council has approved the demolition of a house at 18 Miquel Santandreu Street: 15 new homes are planned for the plot. On Wednesday, 30 September 2026, MÉS per Palma accused the council of failing to protect the city’s architectural heritage.
A façade MÉS says could have been saved
MÉS says a detailed planning proposal drawn up during the previous council term would have protected 250 city buildings and 330 heritage features in rural areas. The house on Miquel Santandreu Street was on the list, with at least its façade earmarked for preservation.
Councillor Kika Coll says that protection disappeared when the People’s Party-led council abandoned the proposal. MÉS is calling on the council to revive it so buildings with heritage value can be protected from demolition.
Questions over the 15 homes
MÉS wants to know who the planned homes are for and what they will cost. The party says Palma needs more housing, but argues that this does not justify demolishing buildings it considers part of a neighbourhood’s identity.
Coll fears the new homes will be beyond the reach of most people in Palma. For now, the demolition has approval; the 15 homes remain a plan.
