Mallorca housing camp cleared: parties demand files

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s capital, Palma, faces a row over the clearance of a housing protest camp in Plaza de España: two parties want to see the orders behind it. On 5 November, MÉS per Palma and Unidas Podemos condemn the clearance and accuse mayor Jaime Martínez of suppressing protest. Unidas Podemos has requested records of the operations against the camp on 3 and 4 November.

Who authorised the clearance?

MÉS per Palma wants the city council to publish the orders and legal reports behind the operation. It claims the Local Police acted without authorisation from the Government Delegation and wants to know whether officers stayed within their powers. That claim has not been established.

Unidas Podemos also wants the written orders, the names of those who issued them and details of any coordination with the Government Delegation and the National Police. It has asked the council to say explicitly if any of those documents do not exist. Its council spokesperson, Lucía Muñoz, accuses Martínez of using the Local Police and Emaya against the protest.

Belongings and the housing strike

Unidas Podemos wants the belongings taken from campers returned immediately, along with a full list of the items and an account of where they went. It also asks how many people were identified, on what legal grounds and whether they face penalties or will be listed as protest participants.

The dispute comes before a general strike over housing planned for 11 November. MÉS mayoral candidate David Pujol says removing tents will not make the housing problem disappear. He argues that living in Mallorca is becoming more expensive and harder for most residents.
