Mallorca housing emergency meets Catalan debate

Mallorca’s housing emergency takes centre stage in Can Picafort, Mallorca, on 24 and 25 October 2026: the Seminari Blanquerna brings experts together to ask how the push for decent housing can go hand in hand with protecting Catalan. The organiser, Grup Blanquerna, says the language’s place in Balearic life will run through the two-day programme.

Isabel Crespí and Eloi Bellés, who teach at the University of the Balearic Islands, open the seminar with a discussion of language use across the islands. Housing experts Walis George, John Prendergast and Albert Massana then set out ways to improve access to decent housing while supporting Catalan.

The programme also turns to Catalan in schools, with representatives from schools in Valencia, Catalonia and the Balearics joining the Balearic teachers’ assembly. Xavier Dengra and content creator Joan Moñino close Saturday’s talks with a discussion of how online creators can shape public debate in the Balearics.

On Sunday, Grup Blanquerna members will elect a board to lead the organisation for the next two years. The seminar ends with Damià Pons, Beatriu Defior, Antoni Llabrés and Maite Salord discussing the Balearic language law, known as the linguistic normalisation law, 40 years after its approval.
