Mallorca housing row meets Ceuta debate in parliament

Mallorca’s housing costs face scrutiny in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 29 September: Balearic MPs are set to question the island government on prices and access to homes. They will also debate a Vox motion on Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta, which other MPs say takes time away from more pressing issues. The session opens with questions on healthcare, including the management of Son Espases hospital.

Housing prices and an expected decree

MPs will ask about the price of homes and protected housing on the island of Menorca. MÉS per Mallorca will press the government on access to housing, while Vox will ask Balearic president Marga Prohens how prices are changing.

Spain’s cabinet is expected to approve a housing decree the same day. Some social organisations call it the “Maricarmen decree”, after an older woman evicted from her home in Madrid last Wednesday. MÉS per Mallorca wants the Balearic Islands declared an area with a strained housing market. What measures the decree will contain remains unclear.

Why Ceuta is on the agenda

Vox brought forward the motion on Ceuta after a large influx of migrants into the Spanish autonomous city in July. Unidas Podemos MP José María García says nobody disputes that Ceuta is Spanish. He argues that the Balearic Parliament should spend its time on housing, transport and the environment instead.

The session will also turn to tourism. MÉS per Mallorca wants to discuss what the government could do to reduce the number of tourists arriving through the airports. MPs will raise questions about the care of unaccompanied foreign minors, too.
