On Ibiza in the Balearic Islands, rising rents and sale prices leave 33% of people facing housing exclusion, according to a Foessa report. Socialist MP Álex Pitaluga cited the finding in the Balearic Parliament on Tuesday, 27 October. He called for Ibiza to be declared a high-pressure housing area, known as a “stressed housing zone”.

Housing minister José Luis Mateo rejected the call. He said designating areas of the Balearics in this way would reduce the supply of homes, not lower prices. Pitaluga said many people were struggling to continue living on Ibiza.

The shortage reaches beyond Ibiza. Mateo said construction across the Balearic Islands had failed to keep pace with population growth, leaving a shortfall of 17,000 homes. He gave no separate figure for Mallorca.

Mateo pointed to plans for 10,000 affordable homes across the islands, including more than 1,200 on Ibiza. They are at various planning stages. He also said construction of homes in multi-home buildings reached its highest level since 2008 last year.
