Mallorca housing crisis: call after 87-year-old eviction

Maricarmen, 87, was evicted from her home in Madrid on Friday, 25 September. Ara MÉS, a Balearic coalition including MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca, says her case shows how hard it can be to protect vulnerable people from eviction. It is calling for action on Mallorca and across the Balearic Islands.

The coalition says the eviction is not an isolated case but part of a housing emergency affecting thousands. It argues that homes have been treated as assets for speculation rather than a basic right.

Why Ara MÉS links the case to the Balearics

Ara MÉS says speculation, tourist pressure and competition between homes and other uses are making it harder to find somewhere to live. It also pointed to Olga's case last week and said thousands cannot afford rent, cannot move out, struggle to make ends meet or live in unsuitable housing.

MÉS per Mallorca and Més per Menorca say they have put forward legislative initiatives in the Balearic Parliament and Spain's Congress. Their aim is to curb speculative purchases and ensure homes are used for living.

Call for stronger protection

Ara MÉS wants Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez and Spain's central government to bring in legal and budget measures to protect vulnerable people facing eviction, limit speculation and expand public housing.

It also says regional governments must use their housing powers. In the Balearic Islands, this includes assessing and processing applications to declare areas under residential market pressure, alongside policies to secure decent housing for the resident population.

The coalition said the PP, PSOE, Vox and Junts were, to differing degrees, standing in the way of a solution to Spain's housing problem.
