Mallorca rent crisis: Prohens wants Spain’s government out

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

In Palma, Mallorca, a couple’s looming rent jump from €900 to €1,500 fuels a row in the Balearic Parliament on Tuesday. MÉS per Mallorca spokesman Lluís Apesteguia says their tenancy ends next month and they do not know where they will live. He presses Balearic president Marga Prohens for swift action on housing and the cost of living. She says the best way to improve people’s lives is to change Spain’s government.

The clash comes a day after an early Spanish general election is called for 29 November. Apesteguia asks Prohens to put the election aside and explain what she will do for people in the Balearic Islands. He accuses her of campaigning instead of tackling the housing crisis.

Prohens accepts that much more needs to be done. She says a recent decree offering tax relief on petrol and diesel is not enough because it leaves out a VAT cut on basic goods. She also accuses MÉS of backing measures from Pedro Sánchez’s government through Sumar’s parliamentary group, and says it should have had more influence over the funding system.
