Mallorca housing crisis: a job may not pay the rent
On Mallorca, even a job may not be enough to leave a shelter: many people cannot find a rental home they can afford. At an event in Palma on Thursday 22 October, church charities said they had supported 750 people experiencing homelessness last year, 91 fewer than the year before.
That drop does not mean fewer people need help, the charities said. People are staying in shelters and other support services for longer because they cannot afford to move out, leaving fewer places for others who need them.
The charities warned that life without a stable home also makes it harder to look after health, maintain family ties and find work. They spoke out against prejudice towards homeless people and called for safe, suitable housing and support that meets their needs. The event came ahead of Homeless Persons Day on 25 October.
