Mallorca housing costs put Prohens under pressure
Mallorca’s housing squeeze puts Marga Prohens under pressure in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday: the Balearic president opens the last general policy debate of this parliamentary term at 10.30am. Opposition parties say homes cost more than when her government took office. Prohens has an hour and a half to make her case.
What will Prohens say about housing?
Government spokesperson Antoni Costa says Prohens will focus on issues that concern people, including the difficulty of finding a home. He expects her to put forward measures to tackle the problem.
Rosario Sánchez of the PSIB says the government is entering the debate without solutions. Vox spokesperson Manuela Cañadas wants all taxes on the purchase of a first home scrapped. MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and Unidas Podemos have also criticised the government’s record on housing.
Election campaign hangs over the debate
The debate comes ahead of Spain’s general election on 29 November. MÉS per Mallorca spokesperson Lluís Apesteguia fears party campaigning will overshadow the Balearics’ problems.
The conservative People’s Party sees it differently. Its parliamentary spokesperson, Sebastià Sagreras, says Prohens has delivered much of her election programme, citing support for self-employed people and families, and the abolition of inheritance and gift tax. Parliamentary groups will set out their opposing positions from 9.00am on Wednesday.
