Mallorca tenants press for general strike despite decree

Mallorca’s tenants’ union is pressing ahead with its call for a general strike despite a new housing decree approved by the Council of Ministers. On Tuesday, 6 October, the Sindicat de Llogateres de Mallorca says the decree has not changed its demands or its strike call. The decree is intended to go before the Permanent Deputation for ratification.

Union spokeswoman Celeste Rodríguez says two earlier decrees were rejected last week. Their measures, she says, would have done only the bare minimum to ease the dire situation facing thousands of tenants in the short term. She calls for a mass, broad-based and historic strike to end the business of profiting from rents and secure an effective right to decent housing.
