Spain housing decree: Díaz demands rent extensions

Madrid, Spain: Yolanda Díaz demands longer rental contracts and protection from eviction as the government plans to bring a housing decree to ministers on Tuesday. Spain’s deputy prime minister and labour minister sets out her demands on Bluesky on Monday, 28 September. Her party, Sumar, will not accept a decree that falls short of the housing emergency, she says.

Díaz also wants rules for seasonal and room rentals, and an end to fraud in tourist rentals. She is not the only minister pushing back. Health Minister Mónica García says the proposed decree is still far from meeting people’s needs or being ready for approval by the Council of Ministers. Youth and Children’s Minister Sira Rego warns that she will not accept a weakened text.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda says it still intends to present the decree on Tuesday. Its planned measures include protection against eviction and steps to stabilise rental contracts.
