Housing decree push after 87-year-old's eviction

The eviction of an 87-year-old woman in Madrid drives a fresh push for a housing decree after she could not afford her higher rent. Félix Bolaños says the government will take the package to the Cabinet next Tuesday, with measures aimed at making housing more affordable and stopping evictions. Speaking in Bilbao on 25 September, the minister called the housing shortage a serious problem affecting thousands.

The woman was evicted on Wednesday from a home owned by Urbagestión Desarrollo e Inversión. Bolaños said the planned decree responds to evictions such as hers, which he described as deeply traumatic.

Hunt for backing

Bolaños is seeking support from parliamentary groups for the decree and said talks were under way with Junts as well as other parties. He argued that negotiations need to stay private because public talks make a deal harder.

He urged parties to show responsibility, while accusing the PP and Vox of representing property speculators rather than people who need a home. He said their votes had blocked earlier anti-eviction measures.

Billions planned, but minister says more is needed

The government plans to invest €7,000 million in housing from 2026 to 2030, Bolaños said. It also intends to provide more than €23,000 million in financing to help thousands of people with financial difficulties access affordable homes.

But he admitted the planned action would not be enough. He called on all autonomous communities to help tackle the problem and claimed that housing law was not being applied in regions governed by the PP and Vox.

Bolaños rejected expropriation as a solution, saying it leads nowhere and has no clear place in Spain’s Constitution. Instead, he called for broad measures to make it easier to find a home to rent or buy while preventing further evictions.
