Mallorca’s housing row sharpens: the Balearic government is weighing a Constitutional Court challenge to two Spanish housing decrees if Congress approves them on Friday, 2 October. Speaking in Palma, Mallorca, government spokesman Antoni Costa said officials would look for grounds to contest the measures, including any intrusion on Balearic powers.

Costa argues that the decrees put pressure on small property owners and could reduce the number of homes available to rent. He said families and young people looking to rent in the Balearic Islands already face greater difficulty. Those are the regional government’s claims, not established effects of the decrees. Costa urged Balearic members of Congress to vote against them.

The dispute also reaches beyond housing. Costa said the Balearic government wants Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez to call a general election. He ruled out an early Balearic election; the regional vote is scheduled for May 2027. For now, any court challenge depends first on what Congress decides.
